Our 2018 Melbourne Cup Guide

Melbourne Cup is one of Australia’s most anticipated events in the sporting and social calendar. Dating back to 1861, it is the most prestigious annual thoroughbred horse race in Australia. Hosted at Flemington Racecourse as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival every year, the 3,200 metre race features 24 nominated horses from all around the world.

There are nine other races taking place throughout the day on November 6 but, known locally as ‘the race that stops the nation,’ the Melbourne Cup will take centre stage at 3pm and is a major event not to be missed!

Betting on the 2018 Melbourne Cup

This year’s prize money will offer a combined $7,300,000 for the top 10 horses with the winning horse winning a whopping $6.2million.

Around 300 horses are nominated for The Melbourne Cup every year but the final field of 24 will be officially announced on November 3. Most bets are therefore placed in the final three days leading up to the race rather than too far in advance.

If you’re planning on betting on the race, make sure you compare information from various bookkeepers. Each bookie will offer different odds based on market trends, their own analysis and bets they’ve already taken. So do your research! Or just pick the horse with the funniest name, sometimes that works too…
