Melbourne City Circle Tram

Take a tour on the City Circle Tram…

The most authentic and convenient way to get a thorough picture of Melbourne city is to hop aboard the free City Circle Tram. Visitors will see the sights of central Melbourne and the Docklands all while experiencing a ride on one of the city’s much loved heritage trams.

Not only is travel completely free on the City Circle Tram but with an easy hop on, hop off system you can visit a wide variety of attractions in the Melbourne CBD. Trams have been an integral part of Melbourne’s public transportation system for over a century and form part of what Melbourne CBD is today. A stay in Melbourne isn’t complete without a ride on the trams!

With its distinctive burgundy colour, the City Circle Tram is easy to spot. If you want to see the whole city, the loop takes about 45 minutes, or you can get off at any one of the many stops to explore more on foot. To catch the City Circle Tram, simply wait at any tram stop along the City Circle Tram route. These tram stops are specially marked with a City Circle sign. Trams operate in both directions every 12 minutes between 10am and 6pm from Sunday to Wednesday and between 10am and 9pm every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. City Circle Trams do not run on Christmas Day and Good Friday.

The Melbourne City Circle Tram travels a rectangular route along Flinders, Spring, and LaTrobe Streets, then Harbour Esplanade in Docklands. A fantastic tour all around the Melbourne city centre. From the western end of LaTrobe Steet it takes the rail spur into Docklands Drive to the Waterfront City area before doubling back to link back to the rectangular route. You are able to ride the City Circle Tram either clockwise in an easterly direction or anticlockwise in a westerly direction.
